About Portugal North – Oporto

Porto, a World Heritage city, is not only the perfect place to discover the origins of Port wine, but it’s also the birthplace of the nation with history dating back to the 12th century. Porto is also a city of contrast, with heritage churches and monuments such as the historic Cathedral and the Church of São Francisco, set apart from the more contemporary award-winning architecture of the Casa da Música and the Serralves Museum. And here, is also where the Douro River meets the Atlantic Ocean, creating a logistical hub to export wines around the world, hence the name Porto.

While here, take a ferry on a Rabela to cross the Douro River to the Port Wine lodges in Gaia, classified as a World Heritage town where you can enjoy a “francesinha» sandwich with a Port at an outdoor terrace. Or, even better, take a private tour with a local food and wine expert to learn more about the local delicacies in preparation for a day trip to the Douro Valley. Then, after a few days in northern Portugal visiting Heritage towns such as Vila Real, Gumarães and Bragança, head further north to visit neighboring “cousins” in Galicia to extend your stay on the Iberian Peninsula.
